Thyroglobulin and Thyroid Peroxidase are proteins involved in the production of thyroid hormones. This test is to see if antibodies from your immune system are attacking these thyroid proteins rendering them useless.

Antibodies to either of these important thyroid proteins can result in hypothyroid symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, dry skin and constipation. Conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and autoimmune hemolytic anemia may have also have these antibodies present.

This panel tests for both:

  • Thyroid Peroxidase antibody      (TPO)
  • Thyroglobulin antibody (ATA)

Both tests are often used in together to access thyroid function, follow treatment for thyroid disease and differentiate between autoimmune conditions of the thyroid.
