There are many, many different types of estrogen in the body. Three are well-known and used in Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy. Estrone or E1, Estradiol or E2 and last, but definitely not least Estriol or E3. They each have different biological properties and different levels of estrogenic activity.
Estriol E3 has a weaker estrogenic affect and according to research may even be protective against some cancers. E3 accounts for about 50-80% of the circulating estrogens. Even though Estriol is considered a weak estrogen it has shown to be very effective in supporting women with menopausal symptoms.
E2 or Estradiol is a potent estrogen and accounts for about 10-40% of the Total Estrogen in the body. It is the most widely used in Bioidentical Hormone Treatments.
Estrone E1 is a very potent estrogen, it accounts for about 10-20% of the circulating estrogen. The problem with some forms of estrone is its ability to stimulate breast tissue growth. This can be a problem with cancer.
Different combinations are precisely made by a Compounding pharmacy. Any combination of the three estrogens is combined together in lozengers, creams or gels depending on what the Physician decides would be best for each woman. Commonly we would use a formulation of Biest E2/E3 combination with a customary 20%/80% ratio that is adjustable to each woman’s personal needs. Triest is also used but much less commonly and it is the 3 estrogens E1/E2/E3 in a 10%/10%/80 % ratio.
