Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease associated with the thyroid. The immune system makes antibodies that attack the thyroid cells of the person’s thyroid. The damage caused to the thyroid cells do not allow them to make the hormones that they should to run the metabolism of the body. Hashimoto’s Disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormones) yet most doctors do not test for an autoimmune component to hypothyroidism.
